Katy HutchisonThe Story of Bob |
Katy Hutchison has been telling audiences her compelling, real life story of forgiveness. Katy’s story begins with the murder of Katy’s husband Bob, which occurred when he innocently went to check on an unchaperoned party at a neighbour’s home in Squamish, BC. Katy knew that she wanted to make some kind of a difference right after Bob was killed. The circumstances of Bob’s death and the events that followed lead to the development of her presentation – a powerful and poignant multi-media presentation, in which Katy describes the ways in which alcohol and drug use, peer pressure and the poor choices teens can make in unchaperoned settings, conspired to cause the tragic death of her husband.
Katy’s presentations are growing more and more popular each year as she offers tips that parents and teachers can use to empower teens to prevent similar tragedies. Her presentation explores the power of forgiveness and restorative justice. She has taken her message of forgiveness and compassion to audiences around the world. Katy has written a book about her experience called “Walking After Midnight”, she has also been featured in Canadian Living, Reader’s Digest and Chatelaine magazines and recently appeared in a documentary on CBC’s DOCZONE series. She was nominated for the Courage to Come Back Award in 2003 and the Woman of Distinction Award in 2004.
Katy Hutchison lives with her husband and family, including her teen aged twins Emma and Sam, in Victoria, B.C. She speaks to people around the world about restorative justice and social responsibility. Hutchison has spoken at numerous schools, has appeared on national TV and has also been heard on radio across the country.
"The presentation you delivered was extremely powerful and moving. Your depth of forgiveness and power to see a better future for your self, your children, your family and your community is truly awesome and inspiring. As you know, you really affected our community here. We had three residents asking how they could be apart of a Restorative Justice process with their victims. I am pleased to inform you that the Probation Officers in attendance, as well as the staff here at the Centre are doing everything in our power to assist these young offenders to grow and learn from your shared experience, and make amends with their victims. Your influence is having the ripple effect we spoke of, and for that we are extremely grateful for the time you spent with us."

One Woman’s Journey through Murder, Justice and Forgiveness (more about the book)
“Many people who have been harmed or wronged often feel that to respond with non-violence and forgiveness is to be weak. As Katy Hutchison reveals here, to forgive and seek reconciliation not only requires even more strength than a resort to force or retaliation, but also ensures deeper, more far-reaching beneficial consequences for all concerned. I am sure her remarkable story will serve as an inspiration to others beset by grief and loss as she was.” —The Dalai Lama
