Biography

Margaret Wheatley is president of the Berkana Institute, and a principal of Kellner-Rogers & Wheatley, Inc. Formerly, she was Associate Professor of Management at the Marriott School of Management, Brigham Young University. In more than twenty-five years of consulting and research, Dr. Wheatley has worked with a wide variety of Fortune 500 clients, educational institutions, non-profits, and health care organizations, from CEOs to assembly line workers.

For the past several years, she has been working with organizations that want to achieve organizational coherence in the midst of chaotic environments. Her consulting firm, Kellner-Rogers & Wheatley, Inc., focuses on applying natural science principles of self-organization that engage the intelligence of the entire organization to respond to change continuously. Kellner-Rogers & Wheatley is actively experimenting with organizational redesigns that support the speed, flexibility, resiliency and autonomy required to today’s environment. Their clients cover an unusually broad range: the U.S. Army; many major corporations; state and district public schools; hospitals; and foundations.

She is a frequent keynote speaker in the U.S. and internationally, presenting seminars to senior executive groups, organization redesign teams, community groups and professional associations. Kellner-Rogers & Wheatley offers a 3-day public seminar on Self-Organizing Systems in Utah every few months.

Her book, Leadership and the New Science: Learning About Organization from an Orderly Universe (San Franisco: Berrett-Koehler, 1992) was named “Best Management Book of 1992” in Industry Week. This book is credited with establishing a fundamentally new approach to how we think about organization. It has been translated into seven languages and featured in many business publications, including Fortune, CIO, Industry Week, Working Woman, and many industry specific journals. Leadership and the New Science is now in video, produced by CRM films. Her new book, A Simpler Way (San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler, 1996) co-authored with Myron Kellner-Rogers, is also a best seller, describing the self-organizing evolutionary paradigm for organizations. Her other publications include work on the impact of opportunity and power on job behaviours in organizations; attitude change in corporations; and managerial ethics in times of modern confusion.
