Tom Armstrong has been a railroader for over 30 years and has held various staff positions within Canadian Pacific Railway. A Locomotive Engineer since 1977 Tom Armstrong has had enough of crashing into vehicles at level railway crossings. After going through a ten year period of hitting everything from a parked car to a road grader he has put "his" story together, and is willing to share it with you.
Tom has made a personal commitment to stopping this needless cause of pain and suffering. He has witnessed families torn apart as locomotives smash their way through peoples automobiles as well as their lives. He's even watched a mother drag her family in front of his train because she didn't want to wait.
Every year Tom brings his special message to a large number of audiences including educators, Driver Education students, corporations, professional associations and not for profit groups. His powerful message is emotional, true and honest - based on real life experiences.
The presentation is effective in changing people's attitudes towards safety not only around trains, but in their every day lives as well.
Tom has brought public awareness to Road-Rail Crashes and Trespassing through newspaper articles, radio interviews, nationwide television and radio commercials. He has appeared on the national talk show "What On Earth" and has been featured on a railroad documentary entitled "Derailed: America's Worst Train Disasters" and the award winning CBC documentary "Flirting with Danger." The Pennsylvania House of Representative's Committee on Transportation held a special meeting just to hear Tom's story.
Tom's railway experiences during his life have dramatically changed him forever. He has become driven with a purpose and is willing to share those experiences with audiences across Canada and the United States.
The "Crossing Safely" presentations are sponsored in part by The North America Railway Foundation, a non-profit, private operating foundation. Its purpose is to explore, nurture and support railway safety, efficiency and technology and to educate about and preserve the history of railroads in the United States and Canada.
"I am writing this note just to let you know that your presentation for our company was terrific. You really know how to get the message across, using humor and telling it like it is. I was very touched and awakened by your presentation. Thank you for sharing your experiences with me..."
-Betty Gibson - SaskEnergy
"Thank you Tom, for sharing your experiences with us. You have helped open our eyes."
